COACHING PHILOSOPHY:

Offense

There are many different offenses that can be used in basketball, with a variety of set plays to give your team the best possible chance to score. No matter what offense is run, success will not be attained if certain fundamentals of basketball are not achieved and developed on a daily basis.  It is vitally important that passing and catching, dribbling and shooting be the cornerstone of offensive basketball.  If players cannot pass and catch, dribble or shoot, offensive execution, tempo, and the ability to score is limited.

Through daily player development of these fundamentals, offensive sets and styles can be altered to fit the individual skills and ability levels of a team.  In reality, shooting and ball handling skills are continuous fundamentals that require year around work.  Just picking up a ball and practicing only during the season, limits one’s true development as an offensive player.  Few other sports truly require year around work on the fundamental skills as do basketball, if a player wants to become as good a player as possible.  Offenses, set plays and patterns may change, but development of the fundamental skills necessary to play the game of basketball will not.

Grundy Center basketball is known for playing an up-tempo fast-break style of basketball which revolves around a numbered lane break and a secondary break.  Due to the variety of defenses and the high quality of competition Grundy Center plays, it is also very important for our team to be able to execute set plays in the half court set in addition to pushing the ball up court quickly.  The ability to score in transition and in the half court setting, gives a team a multi-faceted attack which can be successful against various defenses and schemes an opponent may present.

Controlling the tempo of the game is a basic tenet of basketball, whether it is created by a team’s defense or ability to execute and score in a variety ways, controlling tempo is a key component to success.  Notice the word execution has been used often.  Execution comes from being able to perform the necessary fundamentals of offensive basketball and combine them with unselfish team play and smart, disciplined decision making on a consistent basis and under sometimes stressful game situations.  This comes through daily repetition and the confidence which comes from mastery of a skill and an understanding of one’s own ability and what they do for the team.  Through proper execution; scoring opportunities are enhanced, assists and team play is highlighted, rebounding potential is improved, and controlling the tempo of the game can be achieved.

Defense:

Grundy Center boys’ basketball will utilize a variety of defenses based on the ability level of the team and dictates of the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.  Defense requires hard work and a passion to play defense.  Good defense will keep you in every game and give you an opportunity to be successful.

We will prepare to play a number of defenses, from full and ¾ court zone and man traps, half court traps, 2-3, 1-2-2 or 1-3-1 zones, to a solid half court man to man defense. We will mix up our defenses on a regular basis, in hopes of disrupting the opponent’s offense or take advantage of our team’s strength.

Key to any defense we play will be 5 important principles:

1.      Proper Stance

2.      Be in position (Ball-you-man/Denial/Help side)

3.      Back to the wall

4.      See the play

5.      Concentrate and Anticipate

Keep in mind, no matter what defense is played, the important ingredients to good defense are hard work and a passion to play defense.

By adhering to these important principles and key components, a team will be able to contest shots, create turnovers, force tough shots, score off the defense, be in proper rebounding position and control the tempo of a game or situation.

Sportsmanship

As important as how a player shoots the ball, rebounds, or defends, is how players conduct themselves.  At all times members of the Grundy Center boys’ basketball team must conduct themselves in a manner which promotes Grundy Center basketball, their team, their families, their school and community, and lastly themselves.  This includes one’s mannerisms, language, dress and appearance, and conduct on and off the court.

Putting on the maroon and white uniform of Grundy Center basketball is a privilege and a responsibility.  You are representing your school and those around you.  Character is what you are seen or known for now.  Integrity is what you will be remembered for long after your playing days are done.  Grundy Center boys’ basketball will be a team that will be remembered for winning with class and losing with class while respecting the game, our opponents, the officials, and our teammates.

Reach for Your Goals

Respect:  The game, your opponent, the officials, your own abilities.

Never under-estimate or over-estimate the ability of your opponent, and never

over-estimate or under-estimate your own ability.

Enthusiasm:  There is no substitute for enthusiasm or having a passion for what you do. It is contagious.

Attitude:  Be positive.  Be a team player.  Be unselfish. Say please and thank you.  Be humble.  Treat others like you would like to be treated.  A great attitude is as contagious as enthusiasm, but a poor attitude can be a cancer to any team and that cancer must be eliminated.

Citizenship:  Playing by the rules, displaying good sportsmanship, accepting personal responsibility, helping one another, being unselfish and a team player.

Hard Work:  Development of a good work ethic will serve you well throughout your whole life.  Understand that good things happen to those who work hard and work smart.

Believe

The accomplishment of any goal must begin with a belief that the goal can be achieved.  You must believe, you cannot make believe, you must believe.  Goals must be realistic but don’t be afraid to dream big.  No goal was ever achieved without someone first believing it could become a reality.  “If you dream it, you can achieve it.”

Physical Conditioning and Nutrition

Playing basketball at the highest levels requires players to be in extremely good physical condition.  Fast-break, full-court pressure defense requires excellent cardio-vascular and muscular endurance.  Grundy Center boys’ basketball will incorporate the use of Polar Heart Rate monitors during each practice to record and monitor each individual player’s physical conditioning.

In addition, players are encouraged to pursue a diet suitable to achieving maximum physical conditioning.  Avoidance of junk food, reducing the amount of pop drank, and of course avoiding alcohol and cigarettes while choosing to eat more fruits and vegetables, water or sport drinks, proteins and carbohydrates is an excellent start.   Players are also urged to get plenty of rest and developing good sleep habits of going to bed and waking up at regular times.  Proper nutrition and proper rest are key components to good health and athletic performance.  Proper diet and rest habits will allow athletes to pursue maximum performance levels without having regrets later.
